Cougars Acquire Two First-Round Picks from Swift Current
The Prince George Cougars have acquired two first-round picks from the Swift Current Broncos, in exchange for defencemen Josh Anderson (98), General Manager Todd Harkins announced Sunday night.
In return for Anderson, the Cougars acquire the Broncos first round draft pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft as well as a first round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.
“Josh has been with our organization for the past five years and has been a great leader for us on the blue-line and in the dressing room,” said General Manager Todd Harkins. “He’s an NHL drafted defenceman who is going to a contending team in the East and he’s getting a great opportunity to make a deep run in the playoffs.”
Anderson, 19, was drafted by the Cougars in the first round, third overall, in the WHL Bantam Draft. The product of Duncan, BC appeared in 177 career regular season games with the Cougars, compiling seven goals and 28 assists, to go along with 257 penalty-minutes. This season, Anderson appeared in 25 games with the Cougars, scoring once and picking up seven points; he also had 42 penalty-minutes. Anderson was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the third round, 72nd overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft.
“With this deal, we now have five first-round draft picks in the next three years,” said Harkins. “The last time we had that opportunity, we drafted cornerstone pieces Jansen Harkins and Brad Morrison, who helped us win our first BC Division banner.”
The Cougars would like to thank Josh for his time in Prince George and wish him all the best in his future with the Broncos.
Prince George is back in action Tuesday and Wednesday, when they face the Vancouver Giants at the CN Centre in a midweek doubleheader. Tickets for both games are available at the TicketsNorth box office, or online at www.ticketsnorth.ca
