The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club is very pleased to announce that they have signed Ethan O’Rourke (Penticton, B.C.) to a standard WHL contract. O’Rourke, who stands 6’3” and weighs 175 pounds was selected in the third round (53rd overall) by the Prince George Cougars in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft.
Last season with the Okanagan Hockey Academy, O’Rourke netted 18 goals and added 17 assists and 26 penalty minutes in 58 games. He also added two goals in four games with the BCMML Flyers at the U-16 Cup.
“Putting a pen to paper and signing my contract was a really cool feeling and I’m really excited to head to Prince George,” said O’Rourke whose father Steve played professionally for seven seasons and is currently an assistant coach with the Red Deer Rebels. “It certainly made it a lot easier to sign, being already familiar with the WHL. It’s an honor to be drafted, and even cooler to be drafted to a team in B.C.”
“It’s a testament to the New Ice Age in Prince George to now have our top three players from the 2014 draft signed,” said Prince George Cougars General Manager, Todd Harkins. “Ethan O’Rourke is a player who improved every time I saw him play. For a bigger player he is able to skate really well, has skill around the net and is able to compete in all three zones.”
Harkins adds, “He impressed me at the U-16 Top 40 Camp in Nanaimo, and after speaking with his parents Steve and Karen, it was time to get him signed and a part of the Prince George Cougars family.”
O’Rourke is the third signed Prince George Cougars prospect from the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft joining fellow B.C. born forward Justin Almeida (Kitimat, B.C.) and defenceman Max Martin (Winnipeg, MB). O’Rourke and his fellow draftees will attend their first Prince George Cougars training camp, which begins on Friday, August 22nd in Prince George.
