Joel Lakusta Commits to University of Alberta

The University of Alberta Golden Bears men’s hockey announced their recruiting class on Tuesday, and Joel Lakusta is one of 14 WHL graduates set to join the program in the fall.

The Sherwood Park, AB product played in 239 career regular season and playoff games all with the Cougars. Last season, Lakusta had 25 points (5 G, 20 A) in 59 games. In total, he amassed 87 points (17 G, 70 A) in 239 career games that spanned four seasons. Lakusta set career highs in goals (nine), assists (33), and points (42) in the 2017-18 season.

“Joel had an exceptional career with Prince George. Not many players spend their whole career with one team, but when they do, it shots that players character and leadership abilities. Joel has some offensive spark to his game, but is also a very reliable defender with good size,” stated Golden Bears’ General Manager Stan Marple in a team press release.

Lakusta will be playing close to home, as the University of Alberta campus is only 20-minutes away from his home in Sherwood Park, AB.

“It’s nice be playing so close to home finally and my family can come out and watch. It’s hard to turn down U of A when they called. It’s so close to home and it’s a program that is so good. Plus I know a lot of players on the roster, so it seemed like the right fit.”

The Golden Bears men’s hockey team has won three-straight Canada West championships and won the national championship in 2018, their sixth in program history. Lakusta is the third graduating Cougar to commit to a U Sports program this fall joining Josh Curtis (Queen’s) and Mike MacLean (Concordia).
