RECAP: Cougars Can’t Capitalize on Early Start in Loss to Winnipeg

The Prince George Cougars suffered their first regulation loss of their East Division road trip Tuesday, falling 5-1 to the Winnipeg ICE at Wayne Fleming Arena.

Prince George opened the scoring early, but it was Winnipeg scoring five unanswered goals to pick up their second consecutive win. The Cougars fell to 1-1-1-1 through four games on their eastern road swing.

Majid Kaddoura scored the Cougars’ only goal. It was his first with his new team and it came on the Cougars’ first shot two-minutes into the game. Tyler Brennan suffered the loss in net, yielding five goals on 34 shots.

Winnipeg’s Isaac Johnson had two goals and two assists in the victory. Defenceman Ben Zloty recorded four assists, and ICE captain Peyton Krebs had a pair of points. 20-year-old Liam Hughes earned his 11th win, stopping 21 shots.

Kaddoura made it 1-0 for the Cougars at 2:09 of the first period. His point-shot had eyes for the back of the net, as it skipped underneath the goalie’s glove from the blue-line.

The ICE did tie the game late in the opening frame. Czech Republic product Michal Teply scored stick-side on a two-on-two rush with three and a half minutes left in the first period.

In the second, it was Johnson scoring twice for Winnipeg in under two and a half minutes to give them a two-goal lead. First, Johnson made it 2-1 at 11:36 of the middle stanza, after he moved left to right across the zone, before squeezing his shot under the arm of Brennan. Then, Johnson made it 3-1 after Cole Muir spun the puck out to Johnson in front of the net and he quickly went to his backhand and finished it off 13:53.

Winnipeg added two more goals in the third period. Dawson Barteaux made it 4-1 with a power-play marker just 2:18 into the final frame. His point-shot appeared to hit a Cougars’ blade in front before changing direction. Then, Peyton Krebs finished off a solo rush down the right-wing to make it 5-1. Krebs drove wide before cutting to the net and tucking the puck around the outstretched pad of the Cougars’ netminder at 6:39.

Game Notes: Tuesday ended the Cougars’ six-game streak of at least one power-play goal. There were 6-22 in their previous six games. Jack Sander had his six-game point streak come to an end in the loss. He had seven points (1-6-7) in those six games. Ethan Browne (injury), Marco Creta (illness,) and Brendan Boyle did not dress.

Next Up: The Cougars (11-23-3-4) continue their road trip on Wednesday, January 15th against the Brandon Wheat Kings; the puck drops at 7:00 CT / 5:00 PT.
